Stainless Steel 317 / 317L Explained

Stainless Steel 317 and 317L are high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steels specifically developed for superior corrosion resistance in highly aggressive chemical environments. With higher molybdenum and chromium content than 316, these grades offer outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and strong acidic solutions. SS 317 provides excellent mechanical strength, while SS 317L, with lower carbon, ensures better weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Primarily used in chemical processing equipment, acid-handling systems, fertilizer plants, pulp and paper industries, and petrochemical refineries, SS 317/317L are ideal for applications requiring maximum corrosion resistance and long service life under severe chemical exposure.

💡 Practical Difference in Use

Use Stainless Steel 317 when: very high resistance to acids, chlorides, and aggressive chemical environments is required along with superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. → Example: chemical processing equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, pulp & paper plant equipment, and acid handling systems.

Use Stainless Steel 317L when: enhanced weldability with maximum resistance to intergranular corrosion is required for heavily welded structures in severe corrosive environments. → Example: chemical storage tanks, scrubbers, pressure vessels, pipelines, and pharmaceutical processing equipment.

Applications of Stainless Steel 317 / 317L Sheets and Plates

Stainless Steel 317 and 317L are widely used in industries where extremely high corrosion resistance, especially against acids and chlorides, is essential for long service life.

  • Chemical Processing Industry: Ideal for handling aggressive acids and corrosive process fluids.
  • Pulp & Paper Industry: Resistant to acidic bleaching and digesting chemicals.
  • Pollution Control Equipment: Excellent performance in scrubbers and flue gas systems.

When to Choose Stainless Steel 317 vs. 317L?

The selection depends mainly on corrosion severity, welding requirements, and fabrication conditions.

Choose SS 317 when:

  • Maximum pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is required
  • Higher molybdenum content is beneficial
  • Used in strong acidic and chloride-rich environments
  • Higher mechanical strength is preferred over weldability
  • Applications involve limited welding
  • Long-term corrosion durability is critical

Choose SS 317L when:

  • Extensive welding is required
  • Maximum resistance to intergranular corrosion is essential
  • No post-weld heat treatment is possible
  • Used in fabrication of tanks, vessels, and pipelines
  • Improved corrosion resistance at weld zones is required
  • Low carbon content is advantageous
